The Top 5 Areas of Tech You Need in 2020
Lydia Gan
November 27, 2020

In 2020, the digital has become the default. Covid-19 increased the push to digitisation, with many companies utilising tech to improve on their business and workflow. Other than more commonly seen areas of tech and digitisation such as e-commerce and digital marketing, there are 5 areas where tech is most needed in 2020.

1. Information Security

As businesses shift increasingly online, the risk of cyber threats also increases. Think ransomware attacks, phishing attacks, and malspams disguised as legitimate applications related to Covid-19. Those are some of most commonly seen cyber threats today.

Moreover, these cyberattacks are growing in size and sophistication. This could affect not only remote workers, but end-users and customers too. Research done by the International Data Corporation showed that 55% of consumers would change providers or switch to another platform in the event of a data breach. 78% would switch if directly impacted by a data breach.

Being able to detect and prevent cyber threats is now an integral part of protecting an organization. Consider padding up your cybersecurity team with IT professionals so that your important data (and your customers’) is not at risk.

2. Cloud computing

Many of us now work from home. Cloud computing is extremely important to make sure businesses run smoothly.  Flexera’s 2020 State of the Cloud Report demonstrated that 59% of global cloud decision makers and users felt their cloud usage would increase compared to pre-pandemic times.

Cloud computing has many benefits, such as scalability, accessibility, and pay-per-usage pricing. It is also an enabler by leveraging new technology to open fresh channels of revenue.

It may be wise to look into capitalizing on cloud computing technology soon. Professionals who are skilled in cloud computing are high in demand, but short in supply.

3. Automation & Robotics

Investing in automation methods may put you in a better position than other companies in facing unprecedented business challenges. Processes like robotic process automation (RPM), or business process management (BPM) could be an effective solution as the push to go digital increases.

Since cyber threats are on the rise, automation also brings a speedier detection and response rate. In terms of cloud migration, automation can cut short the time needed to carry out related tasks, like manual configuration.

Crises like Covid-19 may prompt you to cut costs. Instead, consider implementing automation to solve complex business tasks- and reduce reliance on inefficient manual processing.

4. AI (Artificial Intelligence)

AI has been on the scene for several years. Many sizes and types of businesses are leveraging on AI to solve business problems. While in the past only large corporations could invest in AI technology, its high-speed growth points towards smaller, younger businesses being able to embrace this technology too.

A PricewatercouseCoopers report showed that AI could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030.

AI is a fast-growing area of tech that if done right, can greatly enhance customer and employee experience. Try looking into how AI can help with laborious or tedious tasks so that your business can focus time and energy on the creative, innovative projects instead.

5. Coding, programming & other tech skills gap

The current tech skills drought affects departments, businesses and companies. It should be addressed, especially as digitization becomes necessary to survive in the current economic climate.

The 2019 IT Skills and Salary report showed that skill gaps will cost employers up to 416 hours and over $22,000 per employee per year. Furthermore, less than 60% of decision-makers affirm that their organizations provide formal training in tech skills for their employees. This is a decrease from last year.

Avoid debilitating your tech and IT department by waiting for this tech skills gap to deepen. Seek qualified candidates such as those from Glints Academy to increase the efficacy and productivity of your business now.
