A Closer Look at Hiring Practices in Colombia

When planning to expand your employee base in Colombia, you should first have an in-depth knowledge of the employment landscape. This will be your number one priority. Here are the things to consider:

  • Employment Contracts and Compliance: In Colombia, employment is governed by the Substantive Labor Code, and contracts must be written in Spanish. The code sets out the rules for the different contract types and the obligations employers owe to their workers.

  • Mandatory Benefits: Employers must provide cesantías (severance of roughly one month's salary per year plus 12% annual interest), the prima de servicios (a mandatory bonus of about one month's salary split between June and December), and statutory vacations.

  • Work Hours and Social Security/Tax: The workweek is being progressively reduced toward 42 hours. Employers pay social security contributions for health (EPS) and pension, as well as parafiscales to SENA, ICBF, and the family compensation funds.
